Putting off the things we want to to do can end up lowering our energy and happiness levels. If we are not careful we can end up feeling stuck or start beating our selves up for not being in action.
There are generally 3 explanations why we find ourselves thinking more than doing:
- We are not inspired. Sometimes we say we want to do things because we feel we “should”, perhaps our parents/partner or friends think it’s a good idea so we go along with it. Unless we really want to do something ourselves we simply won’t have the motivation to see it through, and then end up beating ourselves up for not doing it when we didn’t want it anyway! Craziness. Drop any “shoulds” off your to do list and choose things that make you happy instead.
- We are scared. Fear can cause us to freeze; fear of failure, not being good enough, looking stupid and so on. However, if it’s something you really want then allowing yourself to feel scared but do it anyway will help you grow and raise your self confidence levels. It’s an amazing feeling when you push past your boundaries and realise it’s all ok. The longer you put something off the scarier it seems so put something in place to make it happen, for example; book that flight, hand in your notice, ask to set up an meeting with the person you’ve fallen out with, book the course…..
- We are lazy, tired, too busy…. There are all manner of excuses why we don’t get in to action, sometimes valid but often it’s just a case of taking a small step to build momentum. Even if you are feeling tired or busy just do one small thing to make you feel a step closer, it’s amazing how this lifts your energy and starts to drive you to take more steps.
